Our next book is On Beauty by Zadie Smith. The story follows the lives of a mixed-race British/American family living in the United States. It addresses ethnic and cultural differences in both the USA and the UK, as well as the nature of beauty, and the clash between liberal and conservative academic values.

Please consider attending a public hearing at 6 p.m. on October 17 at the Armory held by the city of Olympia’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee on the renaming of the Kaiser Woods Park. The purpose of the hearing is to review and gather public comment on the suggested names. People can speak during the public comment period at the beginning of the meeting.

Marj Yung
Member of the Thurston County League of Women Voters and as president, Marj worked on planning, parks, and shoreline management issues. She was the first woman elected as a Thurston County Commissioner. She modernized county government by overseeing the hiring the first county administrator, creating one road district instead of three, and creating a central administrative structure for human services, budget development, and data processing. Marj also was the sparkplug for establishing the 9-1-1 system.
Jolene
Jolene was instrumental in drafting Initiative 276, the Open Public Meetings Act. After the act passed overwhelmingly, she wrote a booklet “Who Gave, Who Got, How Much. ” After her public disclosure work as a citizen activist, she went on to become a state legislator then a member of Congress. As a lawmaker, she was successful in getting water quality, toxics waste control, and sustainable forestry operation for national forests laws passed.
